- Description
- In the first half of 1968 students throughout the western world seemed to be the vanguard of revolution. By contrast with Europe, student militancy in Australian universities varied in timing and intensity. Queensland led the way when, just before the 1966 federal elections, radicals formed Students for Democratic Action, in imitation of the American organisation which had called for a New Left and advocated "participatory democracy." Anyone wishing to understand how and why western civilisation changed so greatly in the last third of the twentieth century will need to study the implications of 1968 and its aftermath. Rut those seeing the student revolt of those years as an inspiration or guide to social change will be disappointed. After four decades the celebration of the magic year is unlikely to prove profitable.
